Art
Shop Kids 1995
Group shot of the children attending Art Shop camp in Coeur
d’Alene, Idaho summer 1995---sponsored by the Citizens
Council for the Arts. Artist Janet Torline and I are talking
in the center. I’m wearing my Keith Haring T-shirt. I
led two groups with 20 children aged 9-12. We learned a song
by the pop singer Desiree called You Gotta Be, choreographed
it with dance and acrobatics, then performed it as a “live”
music video. We dedicated it to the memory of the former 12
year old child slave Iqbal Masih, Reebok Human Rights Awardee
from Pakistan. His death inspired international youth campaigns
to eliminate child labor. Most of the kids in my class did not
know where Pakistan was located. We sent a petition letter to
the president of Pakistan.
