Ruthie
& Mandy Jacobson
Ruthie with South African activist/filmmaker Mandy Jacobson.
She and Croatian/American filmmaker Karmen Jelincic co-directed
the award winning film Calling the Ghosts. It told the story
of two women legal professionals (a judge and corporate lawyer)
who were held in a rape cape in Prejidor during the Bosnian
war. The film followed their journey from victimization to survivors
to activists. My master’s thesis was a case study of the
film. It showed how the film helped lead to the first conviction
of rape as a war crime. I interviewed Mandy Jacobson, Karmen
Jelincic, the editor Susanne Rostock, executive producer and
actress Julia Ormond, Pulitzer prize winning journalist Roy
Gutman, executive director of the Coalition for International
Justice Nina Bang-Jensen, Amnesty International’s western
regional director Cossette Thompson, and Senator Frank Lautenberg’s
former foreign policy advisor Sharon Waxman.
