Ruthie,
Ngawang, & Eugene
Ruthie with Tibetan filmmaker/musician Ngawang Choephel and
Mercury Sun photojournalist Eugene Louie at the Peace Abbey
in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Ngawang was a former Fulbright scholar
at Middlebury College who went to Tibet to film Tibetans singing
and dancing. He was arrested by the Chinese government and given
an 18 year sentence. See Eighteen
Years for Song and Dance. I volunteered to help
host his mother when she came to Harvard as part of an international
multi-city tour to gain support for the release of her son.
Our efforts helped gain his release after 6 years. I’ve
since helped him continue the documentary he started before
he was unjustly thrown in prison.
